Our Club History
The formation of the Lions Club took place on the 12th of September 1967. The Mother Club was Elizabeth Lions Club; several of their members attended which helped to recruit several businessmen to come to this function. On November 25th, 1967, a Charter night was held where 22 members were presented to the public at a dinner held in the Gawler Institute, together with Charter President Dr Frank A White received the Charter from District Governor Brin Clarke.
The first 20 years the Club were very active with working projects, Gawler & District Olympic swimming pool, preparation of the grounds, planting lawns, erecting park seats and fencing around the perimeter. The park was officially opened by the Mayor of Gawler, Dr Bruce Eastick for the South Australian Championships, which were held in 1970.
1977 Our Membership had grown to 42.
1980 Funds were donated to purchase a Medical Research System for the Gawler Hutchinson Hospital and we assisted in the completion of the Aged Cottage Homes project.
1989 Lions Club of Gawler hosted the Lions District Convention.
2000 Lions Club of Gawler was invited to by Adopt -A-Station to lease and care for, the Gawler Railway Station including the Railway Station Masters house and carpark area. It was suggested that we hold a Sunday Market: The market started with 12 stalls and has grown to what it is today. All monies raised from the Market and Catering goes towards projects in our community, and Lions Nationally and International approved projects.
We also have a social co-ordinator where once a year we invite members and partners for a weekend away, So far we have been to Clare, Port Hughes, Wallaroo while there we visited the local Lions Clubs for a social meal, Fun and fellowship was had by all.
Lions Clubs are part of community life, in the cities and in the country. Clubs are easily identified by their distinctive Logo, the trademark of our International Association, and the ‘We Serve’ motto. The Lions Club of Gawler Inc. was formed in September 1967 and Chartered in November 1967.
